BDF’s Green Ramadan Initiative – A Successful Start
Ramadan is a time of reflection, gratitude, and community. It’s also an opportunity to embrace sustainability and protect the environment. This year, the Bengal Dragons Foundation proudly launched the Green Ramadan Initiative, which inspired hundreds across Wales to adopt eco-friendly practices during the holy month, with measurable success.
Why a Green Ramadan?
Islam teaches us to be stewards of the Earth. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasised conservation, kindness to animals, and reducing waste. Yet, Ramadan often brings increased food waste, plastic usage, and energy consumption. Through the Green Ramadan Initiative, we helped reverse this trend by promoting meaningful, practical steps rooted in Islamic values.
Our Impact This Ramadan
Over 500 individuals and families committed to using reusable water bottles and containers.
Mosques across Wales replaced disposable plastics with biodegradable alternatives for iftar.
Water-saving awareness posters and flyers were distributed to mosques, encouraging mindful wudu practices.
Energy-saving actions, like switching to LED lighting and reducing appliance use, were adopted in over 50 homes and community spaces.
Community Litter Pick & Iftar – A Shared Success
As part of Keep Wales Tidy’s Spring Clean Cymru, BDF hosted a Community Litter Picks and Iftar, attracting over 80 volunteers across Newport and Cardiff. Together, we collected more than 60 bags of litter, beautifying our neighbourhoods and promoting civic responsibility.
The community iftars that followed created an atmosphere of unity and reflection, with attendees breaking bread and sharing food using sustainable practices. The events were praised by local councillors and supported by businesses providing eco-friendly supplies.
Looking Ahead
This year’s Green Ramadan showed how faith and environmental action can go hand in hand. With the momentum from this year’s success, BDF will continue to expand this initiative by:
· Launching a “Green Mosque” certification programme.
· Hosting sustainability workshops throughout the year.
· Developing youth-led eco-projects for future Ramadan’s.
Join Us in Continuing the Change
We invite individuals, mosques, community groups, and businesses to stay engaged and build on this success. Whether it’s reducing waste, planting trees, or joining our next clean-up, every action matters.
Together, we’ve shown that Ramadan can be both spiritual and sustainable.
